Customizable PowerPoint Sales Force Presentations Problem: A major packaged goods marketer was introducing a new product nationally in the Grocery channel of distribution. Shelf space is always at a premium in the Grocery trade and for this new product to be successful, it would have to take the place of products occupying existing shelf space. This marketer conducted a national audit of the shelving by product and by shelf foot of the competing categories which showed market-by-market and account-by-account what products were occupying more shelf space than they were returning in profit to the Grocery account. The challenge was to provide the local sales force finished PowerPoint presentations that isolated on a market and account specific basis the products to replace on the current shelf with the new product that would generate more profit per linear foot than the Grocery account was currently making. In summary, this required the rapid and accurate manipulation of over 3 million individual measures and then to present the results of this analysis as a finished PowerPoint presentation ready for presentation to the Grocery account. Problem: Given the large amount of available data, a simple interface was developed which required the local sales rep to choose only the appropriate market, account, and a key account to compare to. At that point, a complete presentation was assembled from the data which compared the set criteria in finished charts and tables on a variety of pre-set measures, e.g. $ or unit measures. These resulting charts and tables immediately identified which products were not pulling their weight. The local sales rep could then immediately see and present what products should be replaced with the new product. If this task had not been automated, there would have been the possibility of well over 100,000 charts that might have needed to be created. At the rate of 10 minutes a chart, that would have required over 16000 hours just to create the charts. Using the above automation, each local sales rep was able to create any variation they might have wanted in 3-4 minutes for each variation ... and they didn't have to know one lick about PowerPoint or charts since the application created all that for them programmatically. |
